Believe It Or Not Michigan Is Actually the Warm Spot
If you're like a lot of us here in Michigan, you pretty much blame lake effect for anything from the 3 feet of snow on your porch to the fact that you stubbed your toe when you woke up this morning. But if you're blaming the Great Lakes for the cold weather in Michigan, you might be surprised that the opposite is true.
In much more sciency terms than we're going to go in to here, the above photo and this MLive article explain that our Great Lakes actually protect us from the extreme cold and make us the warmest state in the region, sometimes by several degrees.
And in case you're wondering about last year's ridiculous cold, the effect disappears under the rare instances that the lakes freeze over.
