Is It Acceptable To Spy On Your Kids?

With the growing emphasis on social media within the younger generation, parents have different approaches to the subject of monitoring their sites. In a recent article from CNN, some parents discuss that it is their duty to protect their children, and it is okay to “spy” on their kids. Parents do this by requiring their kids to give them the username and passwords to their social media sites. Other parents do this by openly telling their children that they will be monitoring their sites so their kids can gain the parent’s trust.

On the other hand, the article says some parents discussed that they think it is wrong to “spy”. Parents that believe this think spying would ruin the trust between their children. Even though the internet is not a private outlet, some parents believe that their kids need to make mistakes and learn from them. Parents say that not spying, but having a presence, makes all the difference.

Personally I agree that spying isn’t necessary, but having a parental presence is important. My parents never spied on me, and it worked out just fine. Sometimes a bigger parental input might be necessary to keep kids out of trouble. What do you think? Is spying a good or bad thing?
