LOL! The FBI Wants To Help You With Twitter Speak
A Freedom of Information request led to the shocking news yesterday that the FBI maintains an 83-page glossary of Internet slang terms designed for parents and law enforcement officials.
While most people understand that a simple Google search can answer basically any question anyone would have about any slang term (and let’s be honest, it will probably give us more information than any of us want/need), the FBI’s Intelligence Research Support Unit feels the document is necessary as a primer on shorthand throughout the Internet, including in “instant messages, Facebook and Myspace.” Let’s consider for a moment that the FBI believes Myspace is still relevant…
The discovery of the document doesn’t sit well with everyone, considering the FBI’s taxpayer-funded structure, and the department’s mission to catch the scariest of criminals.
What do you think? Should the FBI focus their resources on catching violent criminals instead of defining text speak, or is this an important part of the process?
